Impregnating-compositions. - A syrupy solution of citric acid and a polyhydric alcohol are applied to material to be impregnated, such as cotton and other fibrous materials, paper, cellular material such as wood, or to a metallic surface to be lacquered, the solution being, if desired, mixed with mineral matter such as china clay, flint powder, tale, silex, powdered slate, &c. The material is then heated up to 230‹ C. to cause chemical action to take place and the mass to be converted into a tough adherent condensation product.
