Cream separators; driving.-A centrifugal separator for milk &c. is driven by a lowpressure turbine which exhausts into a vacuum condenser serving also to heat the milk before it is conveyed to the separator. The spindle 2 of a separator 3 is directly driven by a turbine 5, which also drives through suitable gear a pump 68 for delivering the milk from a tank 66 to a cup 61 and a vacuum pump 58 connected through a pipe 57 with a casing 55. Low - pressure steam supplied to the turbine through a nozzle 50 exhausts through a chamber 51 and a pipe 52 leading to a coiled pipe 53, the upper end of which is connected to the casing 55 by a pipe 54. An opening 56 connects the chamber 51 with the chamber 55 so that the water of condensation from the coil is removed by the pump 58. The milk in the cup 61 passes through holes 62 into a bowl 63 and then through holes 64, 65 on to the inner and outer surfaces of the coil 53, which is thereby cooled, at the same time heating the milk to the required temperature. The milk collects in a bowl 59 whence it passes to the separator 3 through an outlet 73. In a modification, Fig. 3, a receptacle 17, forming the combined condenser and milk-heater, is provided with a stirrer 16 driven by the turbine and with two or more separate steam jackets 18, 19. The steam jacket 18 receives the exhaust steam from the turbine 5 and is connected with the vacuum pump. The jacket 19, which receives live steam from the generating-vessel by way of a pipe 27, is put in operation when it is necessary to heat the milk to a higher temperature. In another modification, the separator 3 is arranged below the turbine, and the condenser comprises a cylinder having corrugated surfaces over which the milk runs on its way to the separator. The vacuum pump may be driven by hand instead of by the turbine.
