Abstract

22,284. Griffin, S. Oct. 1. [Cognate Application, 7644/13.] Clutches, friction.-Relates to means for cooling and lubricating clutch and brake surfaces. A conical clutch surface a, Fig. 1, on a casing c secured to the driving-shaft d is adapted to be engaged by a cone b carried by the hollow driven shaft e. The cone b is covered with non- metallic material, preferably wood blocks suitably spaced to allow the passage of water. Water is supplied to the casing c through a tube f carried by a collar f<2> in the shaft e, and is expelled through holes e<1> leading to the annular space f<1> surrounding the tube f. As shown in Fig. 1<a>, the water is supplied to the bent end of the tube f and flows from the space f<1> to a channel g<1> in the bearing g, from which it is removed in any suitable manner. As shown in Fig. 6, the water may he supplied from one channel g<2> and removed from another g<3>. The water may be supplied through the driving-shaft and be expelled through the driven shaft. The driven shaft, Fig. 3, may carry two coned surfaces b<1>, b<2> adapted to engage a stationary cone k<1> and the driving-clutch casing c, respectively. The cone k<1> may be secured to the driving-shaft and the casing be stationary, and, if not required, the brake cone may be omitted. With a stationary casing, the water may be supplied direct at any point of the casing and be circulated by mechanical means or by convection; it may be carried around the casing by the rotating parts and be expelled at a suitable aperture facing the flow of water. If desired, the casing may contain a fixed supply of water, no means of circulation being provided.
