Abstract

20,093. O'Bryan, G. Sept. 3. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement of; propelling; steering and balancing.-In a flying- machine having lateral balancing - planes controlled by a car adapted to swing laterally on an axis formed by the longitudinal backbone of the machine, means are provided for locking the car to prevent its movement when starting or alighting. The device is shown applied to an aeroplane having super- 10, 11 adjustable by cords connected to a handlever 19 at opposite sides of its pivot, The tube 9 is also rotatable about its own axis by inclining the lever laterally. The propeller 62 is mounted on a sleeve 61 carried by the tube 9 and rotated by a chain from the motor 47. The propeller comprises arms 64 forming auxiliary blades having at their outer ends blades 65. The car 45 carrying the motor and seat is pivotally mounted on the tube 9 and has an upward projection 48 connected by links 49 to sectors gearing with pinions on the shafts 8 of the balancing-planes 7. The lateral swing of the car is guided by a projection 52 engaging a slot in a guide-bar 54 fixed to the lower supporting-plane. A wedge-shaped bar 56 controlled by a foot-lever may be drawn forwards between the car and the guide-bar 54 to prevent the swinging of the car. A spring draws back the locking-bar. Aerial machines adapted to travel also on land; shock of landing, deadening; stopping way.-The front land-wheels 22 are carried by forks 26 movable vertically within partitions 26<1> and cushioned by springs 28. Brakes may be applied against the wheels to hold the machine before starting and for stopping the machine on alighting. The rear wheel 23 is carried by a bar 29 pivoted at its inner end 30 and cushioned by a spring 33.
