Abstract

18,854. Barker, W. H., aud Drysdale & Co. Aug. 16. Direct air or steam pressure apparatus, automatic. -Comprises improved apparatus for controlling the passage of the working fluid to and from the pump chamber. The valve-chest is bolted to the cover 2 of the forcing-chamber by a bolt 3, which is drilled to act as a supply pipe. A float rod 11 and a counterbalance 19 are attached to a pivoted rocker 17, which is controlled or held in its end positions by a weighted or spring-pressed trip 21. The float rod 11 is formed as a valve at 10 and coacts with the supply port 9, an exhaust port, and a passage 13 leading to a reversing-valve 12. Connected to the valve 12 is an exhaust valve 23 of less diameter, so that, if the former is forced down by the fluid pressure, air can exhaust from the chamber to the pipe 24, whereas, when the control valve 11 opens the passage 13 to the atmosphere, the exhaust valve is forced on to its seat and shuts off the pipe. The air supply also passes to a port 14 beneath an ejector 15, the space around the jet being connected by a ball-valved passage with the chamber. This passage may be additionally controlled by a valve which can be adjusted to suit varying loads. The conditions are such that on the delivery stroke the ball valve is closed and air passes from the port 14 to the chamber. When the ball valve opens on the suction stroke, the air from the port 14 passes through the ejector and assists in exhausting air from the chamber. An inlet pipe separate from the bolt may be used. The exhaust from the valve 12 is conducted to the trip box and thence to the chamber ; or it may be passed to the exhaust pipe. Where the chamber is filled by liquid flowing in under gravity, the ejector is dispensed with, and the exhaust valve situated in its place.
