Abstract

18,444. Lake, W. E., [J. B. M. Electric Co.]. Aug. 10. Starting prime - movers, dynamo - electric machines and control circuits for.-A dynamoelectric machine to provide current for ignition and charging a battery, and for use as engine turning-gear, comprises two sets of armature windings one set acting with a series field as a motor and the other set with other field windings as a, generator driven by the engine; the ignition circuit is always supplied with alternating current from one of the armature windings. A starting-switch 68 opens the compression cocks through the links 71 and closes contacts 67 connecting the battery 19 through a lead 65 to one of the armature windings acting as the series motor to turn the engine through gearing 42; the return circuit is through the field coils 66, and lead 53. With the engine running normally, the circuits are at first as shown, and the continuous current generated by the second set of armature windings passes through the shunt field 21 and the coil 36 to close the switch 25. Current then passes into the battery 19 through the coil 63, the circuit passing also through the spring-closed switch 60; the circuit containing this switch 60 is in shunt to a series-field winding 57 which acts in opposition to the shunt field. When the current generated reaches a certain maximum, the coil 63 opens the switch 50 and the current passes through the opposing field. A high-resistance coil 58 is also in shunt to the field 57. Collecting-rings 31 for igniting current are carried on the machine shaft and are connected to a timer 74 and the primary of an induction coil 34 in the secondary of which a distribution 6 is arranged. A water-pump 75 is driven from the machine shaft.
