To all 'whom 'it may concern:
'13e it known that I JOHN W. Jnrson, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Depew, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Engine Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to engine appliances and more particularly to arrangements inalud-ing an internal combustion engine and storage battery and dynamo electric appa-- ratus so arranged that the dynamo electric apparatus may be used for transmitting energy from the engine to charge the battery and from the battery to start the engine.
The main object of my invention is to provide a. simple arrangement for this purpose in whic the engine may be easily started with the employment of a minimum 4amount of energy and in which the interchange or change of gears for this purpose is rendered unneceary. Further objects,

Driven by shaft 7 is a pump 8 for the purpose of circulating the cooling water for the engine. Also secured to the shaft 7 is the amature 9 of a dynamo, which isprovided with two sets of armature windings connected respectively to commutators 10 and 11. 12 re resents a set of shunt field wind- .ings for t e dynamo, and 13 a set of series field windings therefor. 14 represents a storage battery in operative relation to the dynamo electric apparatuspnd having lamp or other translating devices 15 connected across theterminalsby conductors 16. 17 re resents a main switch coiinected in series etween the battery and dynamo electric apparatus and provided with a shunt operating coil 18 and a reverse series coil 19, the switch operating in any usual or well known manalternating current circuit 22 having in series therein the primary of a transformer 23. Connected in series with the circuit 22 is also a timing device 24 of any well known sort. The cylinders 1-1 of the engine are provided with jump spark devices 25 which are connected by conductors 26 with a distributor 27 of any well known kind, and the secondary of the transformer 23 has one terminl thereof connected to the distributer 27 while the other terminal is grounded to the engine by conductor 28.
In order to provide an arrangement whereby the dynamo electric apparatus may supply suicient voltage to supply the hat' tery when being driven by the engine and in which the dynamo electric apparatus may have sufficient torque to start the engine when supplied from the battery, I provide switching means for connecting the two sets of armature windings in series when chargin'g the battery and in arallel when it is desired to start the engine. These switching means also connect the series field 13 to o pose the shunt ield 12 when charging the attery, 'but aid the shunt field 12 when starting the engine. For this purpose a multip e pole switch having three arms 30, 31 and 32, is provided which arms are adapted to make contact respectively with contacts 33, 34 and 35. The arms 30, 31 and 32 are connected by a link member 36 for simultaneously operating the saine.,1
When the arms are in the position s own in full lines the apparatus is connected for starting the engine by energy transmitted from the battery. In such case thedirection of current from the battery is indicated by the arrows 37.
Starting from tliebattery the circuit leads through conductor 38, series field 13, conductor 39, through the varmature windings connected to commutator 10, through condoctor 40, thence through conductor 41, switch arm 30, contact '33 and conductor 42, back to the opposite side of the battery. This connects one set of armature windings and the series field directly'across the battery, so that this part of the apparatus acts ich as a series motor. The other set of armature windings is connected across the battery through the conductor 3S, series field 13, conductor 43, switch arm 32, conductor 44, 5 thence through the armature windings connected to commutator 11, conductor 45, contact 34, and switch arm 31, thence through conductor 41, switch arni 30, contact 33, and .conductor 42, back to the opposite side of 1g the battery. Of course these sets of armature windings connected to the commutntor 11 also act under the infiuence of the series field 13 as well as the' shut field 12 the switch 20 being closed. 15 With the switch in this position, energy is furnished by the. battery to startthe engine, the motor producing sufficient torque with these connbctions, for this urpose. After the engine has attained su cient speed the 2g switch arms 30,' 31 and 32 are thrown in the position indicated invdotted lines, so that the dynamo is connected across the battery. throlI h the following circuits, the direction o charging current being indicated by the arrows 46. From the negative side of the battery, through conductor 42, conductor 47, coil 19, main switch 17, conductor 48, thence through the armature windings connected to commutator 11, 3o thence 4thrmgh conductor 44, contact 35, switch arm'31, conductor '40,l thence through amature windin connected to commutator 10, thence throug conductor 39, series ield 13 and conductor 38, back to the opposite side of the battery;
It will be noticed that with this arrangement of connectionsthe current in the series field is in the reverse direction so that it opposes the shunt field 12 and acts as a 40 regulatin ,field for maintaining the current output o the generator substantially constant. When the engine and dynamo attain suiicient` eed to charge the battery the main switc 17 closes under the action of 46 voltage coil 18. Current passing throu h the coil 19 charging the battery or supp ying the lamps, mds the coil 18 in maintain- .ing the switch closed. Upon a decrease .in speed and voltage of the dynamo, if the 50 batterytends to send current back through the generator, the current in coil 19 opposes the current-in coil 18 and causes the main switch vto open.
By. arranging the sets of amature wind- Y ings .1n series sutlicient voltage is produced to char the battery and yet a suiiicient torque 1s produced upon connecting 'these armature windings -in parallel to startthe engine witha small battery voltage. In order that the engine may be more easily started and with less ener ry, I provide meansfor automatically relieving the 7o pressure within the cylinders 1-1 when it is desired to start the engine. For this purpose pct cocks 50 are provided which are designcd to be opened upon throwing the switching arms 2&0, 31 and 32 to the position shown in the full lines, that is, when it is desired to start the engine.- For this pu 1 pose the link 36 is connected by' means of bell crank lever 51 : 1nd links 52 and 53, with the valves of; the pet cocks, to open same when the switching arms are thrown, to start the engine. Obviously, ang, other suitable means or connecting devices may be provided whereby the pressure of the en 'ne isrelieved. when itis desired to start t e engine. Upon -throwing the switch arms to the position shown in dotted lines the pet cocks 50 are closed so that the engine at once picks up under its own power, so that it wil d rive the dynamo and charge the battery.V l
Although 1 have described my improvements in great detail and with respect to one particular embodiment thereof, never;
theless I do not desire to be limited to such details' except as clearly specified in the a 9a pended claims since many changes and'vm fications may well be' made 4Without depart-f ing from the spirit and scope of my' invention-in its broader aspects. 10G
Having fully and clearly described -my t improvements, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: f
1. The combination of an internal combustion engine, a dynamo mechanically connected to the engine shaft, a.storage battery in operative relation to the d na'mo` whereby energy may be transmitte from the engine to charge the battery andfrom the battery to start the engine, said dynamoun having two sets of amature windings, and switching means for connectingsaid sets of windings in sries when charging the battery and in parallel when starting the'. engine and for relieving the pressure in the v engine cylinders when starting the engine.

3. The combination of an en ine, dynamo electric apparatus mechanical y' connected to the engine to drive the same and be driven thereby, a storage battery in' operative relation to said dynamo electric apparatus whereby energy may be transmitted from the engine to charge the battery and from the battery to start the engine, said dynamo -electric apparatus having two sets of armature windings, a shunt field winding and a series field winding, and switching means for connecting said sets of armature windings in series when charging the battery and in parallel when starting the engine, said series winding being so connectedas to oppose the shunt winding when charging the battery and to aid the shunt Windin when starting the engine.
4. The com ination of an internal combustion en 'ne, a dynamo mechanically connected to t e engine to drive the same and be driven thereby, a storagebattery in operative relation to said dynamo whereby energy may be transmitted from the engine to charge the battery and from the battery to start the engine, said dynamo having two sets of armature windin 'a shunt field winding and a series fiel winding, and switching means for connecting said sets of armature windings in series when charging the battery and in parallel when starting the engine, said series winding bein so connected as to oppose the shunt win ing when char ing the battery and to aid 4the shunt win ing when starting the engine.
5. The combination of an en ine, dynamo electric apparatus mechanicaliy connected to the e gineto drive the same and be driven tlilareby, a storage battery in operative relation to said dynamo electric apparatus whereb ener may be transmitted from the engine toc arge the battery and from the battery to start the engine, said dynamo electric apparatus having two sets of armature windings, switching means for connecting said sets of wndingsin series when charging the battery and in parallel when starting theengine -means for relieving the as pressure in t en ine cylinder or cylin ers, and means whereiiy operation of said switching means causes the opera-` tion of said pressure-relieving means.
6. The combination of an internal combustion engine, a dynamo mechanically connected to the engine to drive the same and be driven thereby, a Stora e battery in operative relation to said ynamo whereby energy may be transmitted from the engine to charge the battery' and from the battery to start the engine, said dynamo having two sets of armature windings, switching means for connecting said sets of windin in series when charging the battery andin parallel when starting the engine, means for relieving the gas pressure in the engine cylinder or cylinders, and connections from said switching means to said pressure-relieving means whereby, when the switchin means is operated tt connect the sets o armature windings in parallel, the rassurerel-ieving means is operated to re ieve the pressure in the cylinder-or cylinders of the en ine.
