Abstract
18,182. Musgrave, J. L., and Crittall & Co., R. Aug. 7. Refrigerating, absorption machines and processes for.-In an ammonia plant, the members of a pair of vessels or tanks, provided each with heating and cooling means, act alternately as generators and absorbers, the vapour driven off being condensed in an intermediate vessel from which the liquid ammonia passes through an expansion valve to the refrigerating coils, and the alternation being effected automatically by electric means according to the pressures in the generator and absorber. The generating and absorbing vessels A, B are provided with steam coils a<2>, b<2> and with coldwater coils a<1>, b<1>, the flow through which is controlled by cocks H, J electrically actuated by solenoids m, m<1> according to the pressures in the vessels. When the vessel A is generating, ammonia vapour passes by a pipe a<3> to one of three coils in the cooling-tank D, and thence by the non-return valve d<1> to the central coil d<4> and so through the expansion valve E to the refrigerating-coil F, returning thence to the absorber B. Alternatively, steam-jackets, gas burners, &c. may be used for heating the vessels, or each vessel may have but one internal coil through which is -passed alternately a heating or cooling medium.
