Abstract

18,101. Mould, D. Aug. 6. Tidal energy, utilizing.-Tanks 8 mounted on piles each contain a float 23 and are provided with sliding doors 19 which are retained in the closed position by spring catches 12, the movement of the gate being limited by stops 22. The floats carry racks 1<1> which drive the shaft 31 in one direction only by a free-wheel arrangement as shown. The gates 19 being closed, the tank 8 empty, and the sea at flood tide, the float 23 engages the catches 12 and releases the gates 19 which are carried up by the floats 20 permitting water to enter the tank 8 and raise the float 23 rapidly. The float descends more slowly than the tide, so that, before it has reached the bottom the tank has emptied itself and the gates are closed by gravity, the apparatus being so timed that the float 23 engages the catches 12 at the next flood. The weight of the float may be adjusted by water introduced through the opening 24.
