Abstract

16,041. Bally, J. July 11, 1911, [Convention date]. Inductor furnaces.-A furnace comprises several retorts 1 arranged parallel to one another in a circle and connected so that they form the sliort-circuited armature of a rotating inductor 4 driven by a shaft 5. The retorts may be of metal or of carbon or mixtures containing carbon, or of refractory materials which become conductive at high temperatures. Current may also be induced in an inner metal frame. The retorts may be cavities in a solid body of magnetic material, the heating being then by eddy currents. In the furnace shown, the retorts are surrounded by a magnetic frame consisting of plates 10, bolted between upper and lower metal plates 6, 7, and are separated from the frame by refractory material 2, which may be poured into the casing after erection. The magnetic plates 10 may have passages through which air may be drawn bv a fan on the shaft 5 or by the rotation of the inductor. The plates 6, 7 consist of segments insulated from one another and from the outer casing 13, and arranged so as to connect the retorts alternately at the top and bottom in a continuous circuit. In another form, the retorts are connected by metal pieces embedded in the refractory material. The retorts are connected by a pipe 16 to a condenser 17. The inductor space may be surmounted by a chimney 15. In a modification, there are two concentric rings of retorts, each connected to form a circuit; a lower temperature is obtained in the outer retorts owing to the weaker field surrounding them. The inner and outer retorts may be connected by pipes. All the retorts may be connected in parallel by rings at the top and bottom. The retorts may be horizontal.
