Abstract

15,979. Wright, C. C., Judge, M. H., Simpson, C. M., and Judge, M. July 8. [Cognate Application, 29,298/12.] Controlling-apparatus, arrangements of hand, foot, and transmission g e a r in conjunction with. - Brake-applying mechanism for the front and the rear wheels, in which the brakes are applied simultaneously or successively, is adapted, by a follow-on or continuous movement of the operating-lever in the same direction, to vary the braking effort of one brake or set of brakes, while that of another brake or set remains limited or unaltered, or is varied in a different ratio. Figs. 1 and 1<a> show a diagrammatic plan and elevation respectively of one form in which cams B<12>, B<13> or the like operate brakes on the front or steering wheels, while similar cams C<11>, C<12> operate brakes on the rear wheels. The brakes employed may be those described in Specifications 7825/09, 9751/09, and 15,518/10. Both the front and rear brakes are operated by rotation of the pedal shaft A<2>, the front brakes being operated first and the rear brakes later. The front brakes are operated by a cam A', which engages a roller B<1> on the arm B of a spindle having another arm B<3>, which is connected to the rocking brake-operating shafts B<10>, B<11>, through an adjustable rod B<4> and a compensating lever B<5>. The front brakes are thus applied with increasing pressure until the point A<3> on the cam is in contact with the roller B<1>, after which the cam is concentric about its shaft A<2> and no further effort is applied. The rear brakes are, however, then applied, with a force depending upon the rotation of the shaft A<2>, by means of a lever C, adjustable link C<2>, compensating- lever C<4> , and rocking shafts C<9>, C<10>. A pin- and-slot or other lost-motion device is placed between the link C<2> and compensating-lever C<4>. The shape of the cam A' can be varied so that its further movement in some cases decreases and in others increases the braking effect of the first-applied brakes. The connexion between the operating-links B<4>, C<2> and the compensating- levers B<5>, C<4> may be adjustable along the levers, so as to apply one brake of each pair with greater force than the other. When this unequal compensation is combined with pull-off springs B<15>, B<16>, C<13> C<14> of sufficient strength, one brake of each pair is applied before the other, and with sufficient force to brake the vehicle. A front and a back wheel disposed diagonally may thus be braked before the others, and their braking effect will be greater. Both sets of brakes may be applied by cams or both by levers, lost-motion devices being provided to ensure successive application. When there is a pin-and-slot connexion between the link C<2> and the compensating-lever C<4> , a separate operating-lever may be provided so as to operate the rear brakes independently of the others. In the modification shown in Fig. 15, three pairs of brakes are provided. The pedal A operates the rear brakes through the link C<2>. and the front brakes through the link D<3> and compensating-lever B<5>. The hand-lever E operates the front brakes and also an independent set of brakes having a compensating- bar E<6>. In a similar modification employing three sets of brakes, the hand-lever and the pedal each act on one set through cams.
