Abstract

15,966. Boyd, J. W. July 8. Cementation; hardening.-Iron or steel is hardened and toughened by being heated in a bath of melted potassium cyanide containing animal charcoal and quenched in a bath of slow-burning oil. The charcoal is preferably obtained from leather charred in contact with wood charcoal and powdered. The oil-bath may consist of 1 gallon of petroleum, 4 ozs. of palm oil, and 2 ozs. of Atlantic red, with or without 1 quart of kerosene, and is preferably used floating on cooled water.
