Compiling and tabul a t i n g statistics mechanically. - Relates to apparatus for mechanically sorting perforated statistic cards and summing the number of cards sorted into each division. The cards are stacked in a hopper 1 and fed forwards by a slide 3, fitted with a picker blade 14 a n d actuated by a lever 7 and crank-arm 11, until they engage a stop 27, which is removable by means of a link 30 and cam-operated lever 31. The cards pass between perforated plates 25, 26, over which is mounted, in a position corresponding to any one of a series of columns, a pinbox 43, 44, the spring- controlled pins of which have stop shoulders 37, the lower of which are adapted to be engaged by a notched plate 50. The frame to which the pin-box is attached is raised and lowered bv spring plungers 107 engaging cams so as to bring the pin-box down and cause a pair of spring plungers 53 to set the notched plate into locking position so as to hold pins that h a v e passed through holes in the card down and to prevent other pins from being accidentally forced down. A pin on passing through a card depresses a cross-bar connected to a stop - lever 61. The stop - levers normally hold back sliding rods 63, which are pivoted to arms 72 on the spindles of the various deflectors e ... l. The card is fed along from the perforated plates by feed-rollers 85-92 driven by a band 130 passing over jockey pulleys 134, 137, 138, of which the last is mounted on a spring-controlled yoke. The receptacles for the cards are placed in pairs vertically, and the sliding rods 63 have collars 68 for engagement by a web 70 on a vertical spindle, which is rocked by a cam so as to reset the stop-rods 63. The pin - box is attached to the reciprocating frame 97 by screws 113 and has turned-down ends 112 notched to engage notched racks 114 on the sides of the frame. Feed-rolls 17, 18, which advance the card to the stop 27, are mounted in spring-pressed links 170, 171 so that they slip while the card is held but pass it on immediately when the card is raised. A counter for each deflector may be fitted, actuated by slotted projections on the crank-arms 72 which operate the deflectors.
