Abstract

15,177. Zenses, J. C. June 28. Filing-machines, reciprocating. - In a machine for cleaning file blanks, the tool is raised from the work on each back stroke, and is reciprocated in a path oblique to the axes of the blanks. The machine consists of a slidable work - holder reciprocated by an adjustable crank and carrying spring supports 4, each capable of being depressed independently to replace a blank. The work-holders 6 are revoluhly mounted on pivots 7 in the supports and carry the revoluble clamps 8, which are rotated during reciprocation through the shafts of pinions 31 which engage a fixed rack 32. This rotation of the blank is only used in the case of half-round or round files, and in these cases the other end of each blank is supported on a support 9 having a central projection with a depression on each side, Fig. 9. When the blanks are inclined as shown in Fig. 7, the rack is shaped accordingly. The tool 16 is carried by a bar 17 guided in grooves in a bow 15 and supported by a lever 19, the bow forming a frame which is reciprocated on bars 14 by a crank disk 20. The lever 19 is supported at its free end on a block 24 which slides with the tool slide, but has its motion limited by stops 27, 28, the former of which at the end of the working stroke causes the rod 19 to slide up the wedge face of the block 8 into the groove 29 at the top, thus holding the tool off the blanks during the back stroke, while the latter serves to stop the block and to allow the tool to be lowered again. The work-holder being reciprocated by a crank has two points on its traverse in which it is practically stationary and to prevent too much metal being removed, the tool is held up from the work. This action is obtained by the annular stop 28 having a groove 33 in it which, at the required times, is engaged by the front end of the block so that the block is not stopped and the tool is not lowered. The ring 28 is rotated by a projection 34 on the slide engaging a pawl frame which drives the ring by a ratchet-wheel, Fig. 4. In place of this arrangement, the work-holder may be reciprocated by a cam and weight. Instead of the tool - holder being raised and lowered, the slide 15 may be raised and lowered, the tool-holder being fixed to it.
