Abstract

15,156. Williams, E. M. June 28. Davits; boat raising, lowering, and supporting gear.-Boats A are supported on chocks B in oblique rows fore-and-aft the ship's deck, with the bow of one boat overlapping the stern of the boat in advance. Adjacent to the boats are sunk deck rails C on which run trollies D carrying a counterbalanced swinging derrick E which lowers the boat with the aid of slings V. The trollies are moved along the rails by rack and pinion gear and are locked in position during lowering operations by clamps which are screwed up to take under the flange of the rail. The boats are steadied by the occupants during this operation by means of lines W depending from rings which slide along a fore- and-aft stretched wire W<1>.
