Feeding webs.-A number of rods or strips are fed to a rivet or bolt making or other machine by a device which allows of different lengths being fed at the same time. A number of levers F are mounted on a shaft E which is rotated to move the levers to the left by a cam on the main shaft and returned by a spring until the levers strike stops 36. The levers engage slides D by means of a fixed stop 15 and an adjustable stop 18, thus varying the lost motion and hence the stroke of the slide. Each slide can be adjusted separately and carries a spring-pressed gripper 1 having a removable jaw 19. The lever F consists of two parts 25, 28 pivoted at 29 so as to fold in one direction but retained normally in a straight line by the spring 32. To allow for wear, the throw of the actuating-cam is made larger than required so that the lever F yields at the end of each forward stroke and whenever blockage occurs. Any feed carriage may also be locked without stopping the feed as a whole. This is done by turning the gripper 1 against the action of a spring and retaining it in the position shown in Fig. 7 by a catch 42 so that the pawl 38 carried by the gripper engages a fixed rack 39. A stationary gripper 3 prevents backward movement of the work. If a sheet is fed, flat jaws 47, Fig. 6, are used.
