Thermometers. - T o detect the proximity of icebergs by determining the temperature of the sea, a thermometer is mounted in a casing 28 inside the hull of a ship, through which casing sea - water can pass freely. The thermometer described is of the mercury - creosote type with spaced platinum contacts let in and communicating with a set of insulated contact members over which a test-lever is passed to give an indication or alarm when the temperature has reached a certain level. A similar thermometer can be used with the water thermometer to determine air temperatures, and, as shown, a mercury bath 32 surrounds one leg of the thermometer. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 9695/13.
