Counters giving monetary indications; transfer mechanism; detent mechanism.-In apparatus for registering monetary values in connexion with postmarking and like machines, (1) the various numeral-drums representing pounds, shillings, pence, and half-pence, are connected by transfer mechanism of the singletooth type; (2) the notched drum 12<B>, Fig. 9, representing the higher denomination of the pounds, is prevented from reversing by a spring-controlled pawl 12; (3) overthrow and reverse movement of the transfer pinions and other numeral-drums are prevented by spring detents 13 engaging with ratchet-wheels 14, Figs. 1 and 8, on the transfer-pinion shaft 3<A>, or with the transfer pinions 8, Fig. 6, themselves. (1) The drum 1, Fig. 1, representing pence and half-pence, the latter being shown by an horizontal line, (thus 10-means 10¢d.), is rotated by a handle (not shown) on the main spindle. A projection 2 at transfer rotates a pinion 3, which in turn rotates the pinion 4, through the connecting-shaft 3<A>, and the toothed-wheel 5 fixed to the shillings drum 6. Transfers to the higher drums take place similarly. When used in connexion with the prepayment system, the apparatus is set to the value representing the amount of postage purchased, and the value reduced by operating the apparatus in the reverse direction. In this case the detents are necessarily omitted.
