Abstract

14,037. Davenport, F. June 17. Speed, varying.-The feed-water pump of a steam-driven motor-vehicle is driven from the main shaft of the engine through reducing- gearing comprising a brake or friction drum C mounted loosely on the shaft and carrying two or more gear-wheels E, E<1>, a flanged wheel D attached to the pump eccentric H and having internal teeth engaging with the gear-wheels E, E', and a gear-wheel A keyed to the main shaft and engaging with the gear - wheels E, E<1>. The pin K is normally removed, and the eccentric H driving the pump either operates at a reduced speed or remains stationary according to whether the band brake C' is applied or not. In order to operate the pump eccentric at the same speed as the motor shaft when this is revolving slowly at starting, the pin K is inserted in holes provided in the drum C and gear-wheel E, so that the gearwheels E, E<1> are prevented from rotating independently and the gear rotates as one solid piece.
