Filters with horizontal filtering-layers; filters, air supply for; supplying liquid in connexion with filters.-A chamber in which fat and sand are separated from sewage, a settling-chamber, and a fermenting-chamber are arranged around a filter-chamber which communicates with a central or peripherally-disposed control pit. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the liquid passes successively through the outer chambers a, b, c and thence through a pipe r to an annular distributing-gutter s, and radial gutters t, from which it trickles on to a bed k, composed of slag, coke, bricks, &c., and supported on a grate n over a ventilating-space f. The liquid collects in a chamber o beneath a control or inspection pit e, and is discharged through a pipe l. Air enters through the pipe l and is discharged through a pipe m. The gutters s, t are provided with overflow tubes w, screw-threaded for the purpose of adjustment and formed with a triangular mouth x at the inner end. In modified apparatus, the control pit e with collecting-chamber o forms one of the chambers of the outer circle, and a perforated aerating-tube is placed vertically at the centre of the bed.
