Abstract
13,496. Bruyas, A. June 8. Fire-extinguishing by pulverulent waterials; chemicals and substances.-Fire-extinguishing or other powder contained in a cardboard or like case 10 is projected from a flared mouthpiece 1 bv the explosion of a cartridge 3, or by the action of compressed gas, a spring, &c., the case 10 being retained in the mouthpiece by an inwardly - projecting rim 12. The case 10 is closed at the ends by paper disks 11, which are torn by the explosion. The cartridge 3 is fired by means of a sliding spring-pressed hammer 4, which is normally maintained in the cocked position by means of a spring-pressed pivoted stop 7 adapted to be disengaged by the pressure of the finger. The cartridge may be fired electrically, the ignition circuit being closed either by hand or automatically, and having an alarm arranged therein. The flared mouthpiece may be mounted on a universal joint, to facilitate control of the direction of discharge. In one construction, the apparatus takes the form of a pistol, the flared muzzle of which is provided with a slotted hood adapted to break up and spread the charge of powder when it is discharged. The fire-extinguishing powder may consist of 2 parts of clay, 2 of lime, 1 of iron protoxide, 1 of manganese protoxide, and 250 of sodium carbonate, to which may be added calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, ammonium sesquicarbonate, flour of sulphur, carbon powder, saltpetre, starch, plaster, borax, &c.
