Abstract
13,247. Dicker, S. G. S., [Landsberger, S.]. June 5. Processes of treating grain.-A machine for perforating maize after soaking, and preparatory to treatment with a sugar solution and roasting to produce a coffee substitute, comprises vertically-reciprocated needles 9, beneath which the grain is fed by an intermittently - moving band-conveyer 22 from a hopper 44. The needles are mounted in a block 5 guided by bolts 4 and actuated by an eccentric 15 and variable connecting-rod 13. A lever 30, pivoted at 31 and connected to the block 5, is linked at the other end by a slotted rod 33 to a lever 34 loosely mounted on the shaft 29 of the conveyer pulley 26, and carrying a spring pawl 39 engaging a ratchet-wheel 28 fixed on the shaft, so that the conveyer is operated on the upward movement of the needles. The motion only commences after a certain amount of play allowed by the slot 37, which permits the grain to be previously removed from the needles by a wiper 11 through which they pass. A rod 47 carrying agitators reciprocates across the hopper 44, being connected to a bell-crank lever 51 pivoted at x and linked by a rod 49 to the lever 30. The grain is distributed on the conveyer by a pocket-wheel on the shaft 53, and is spread out by a rotary brush 58.
