Abstract
12,986. Colin, R. June 2, 1911, [Convention date]. Void. [Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Drawings to Specification. Ships' course signals; locating sounds.-Each ship is furnished with audible signalling-devices of different tone at its bow and stern, and these are sounded simultaneously so that a second ship can, by noting the time-interval between the two sounds, determine whether the first ship is steering directly towards or away from itself or at an intermediate angle. The tone-difference of the two sounding-devices is in proportion to the length of the ship. The receiving-arrangements comprise four microphones, placed fore and aft and at each side, which influence telephones and registering - apparatus. This arrangement enables the direction of a sound to be ascertained. The sounding - devices may be installed at the two sides of a harbour mouth, and on reefs &c., being controlled, in the latter instance, from a distance.
