Abstract

12,579. Orth, C. P. May 28. Self-driving machines. -Relates to self-driving buoyancy machines, and consists in making the collapsible floats of square section hinged at one corner and operated at the diagonally opposite corner. Figs. 1, 2 show a number of floats 1.0 which are carried upon bars 5 secured to a hub 4. The whole is mounted in a tank 1 containing liquid, and air is admitted to and expelled from the floats at the correct times. The side members 7 of each float support are formed of parallel bars 8 serving as guides for rollers 11 at one corner of the float. For collapsing the floats, a cam 19 actuates through rollers 23 and springs 26 a system of bars and links 27, 28, 29 secured to the travelling ends of the floats. The casing 15 secured to the shaft 3, communicates with all the floats by tubes 16. To reverse the direction of movement, the sleeve 20 carrying the cam 19 is provided with a gear-wheel 30 meshing with a hand-wheel 31. This may be turned through 180 degrees and locked in position. In the modified form shown in Fig. 5, the travelling ends of the floats are operated by cam-tracks 60. The floats are mounted on chains passing over sprocket-wheels 43. The floats are equipped with air-tubes 62 leading to a common conduit 63 and to air-tanks 64. The shaft of one of the wheels 43 is extended to carry a power pulley and brake drum 66, shown in Fig. 9. Around the wheel 66 is arranged the hand 67 terminating in links 68 secured to a disk 69, the handle attached to which is held in place on a slotted arc 75 by means of a nut.
