Abstract
12,478. Vernay, J. B. May 26, 1911, [Convention date]. Blowing; cutting off excess of metal.-Relates to a machine for making bottles &c. Molten metal is placed in a vessel 18 and a cover 29 applied. The carrier 19 supporting the vessel 18 is then moved along a slide 5 so as to bring the vessel 18 below the closed blank mould 65. The vessel 18 is then pressed up into contact with the blank mould 65 by a pedal 26, and the bottom 20 is projected into the vessel so as to force the molten metal into the blank mould. The vessel 18 is lowered somewhat and the excess of metal cut off by compressed air issuing from an annular chamber 34. The carrier 19 is then moved back so as to bring a mould-bottom 71 under the mould 65. The bottom 71 is raised by the pedal 26, and the plunger 102 is brought down by a handle 120, which also allows air to enter the blank and expand it. The neck mould 79, 80 and blank mould 65 are rotated about their common axis by hand, the blank mould 65 being mounted in a carrier 54 specially adapted to permit this. The blank mould 65 is then opened and the bracket 4, bearing the neckmould ports and suspended blank, is swung round the column 3 to the opposite side of the machine, where the blowing is completed. During this motion, a lever 105 operated by a cam 108 raises the plunger &c. The neck mould 79, 80 is also caused to grip the neck firmly by cam mechanism contained in the carrier 76. The intermediate mould 122 is closed round the hanging parison and the blowing continued, after which the finishing-mould 155 is employed in completing the blowing. Two moulds 157 mounted on a sliding carrier 8 are employed to indent the bottom and can be raised for this purpose by a pedal 170.
