Abstract

11,847. Snowden, A. May 18. [Cognate Application, 28,767/12.] Openers; feeding openers &c.-Rag-tearing machines, cottonopeners, &c. are provided with an additional set or sets of feed-rollers arranged around the periphery of the swift 4, and with means for catching the fibre as it is thrown off the swift and for leading it back to the next set of rollers. The fibre thrown off at about the point 6 and the fibre not so thrown off and caught by a deflecting plate 8 is taken by a cage roller 7 rotated by a driven roller 9 under the far end of the plate 8. The fibre passes between the rollers 7, 9 and falls on to a positively driven apron 10, which conveys the fibre to the second or additional set of feedrollers 11, where it is again treated. After this second treatment, the fibre is thrown off on to a second cage roller 7 and is caught by a second deflecting-plate or by a short plate 8 and a conveyer band 12 to be delivered to a conveyer 10 and feed-rollers 11. The fibre after this third treatment may be again treated by the devices 7 ... 11 and finally delivered to a shoot 14, through which it is blown by a centrifugal fan 15. The conveyer band 12 passes around a driven roller 9 and guide-rollers 12a, 12b, and the lower part is so disposed in relation to the apron 10 as to compress the fibre on the apron; the rollers 9, 9 perform a similar function. Aprons 16, 16, 16 arranged above the cage rollers prevent the wind set up by the rotating swift from escaping otherwise than through the cage rollers. A canvas or like screen 17 at the back of the machine allows the passage of air but prevents the escape of dust &c. Each set of feed-rollers may comprise two, three, or four rollers which are arranged to rotate at increasing speeds towards the end of the machine; the fourth or fourth and third rollers may be provided with Garnett wire. The cage rollers are preferably mounted in resilient bearings, and the cage rollers and rollers 9, 9, 9 may be provided with stripping-rollers. A roller may be provided to throw the bits not opened by the swift back upon the ordinary usual feed-apron 2.
