Abstract
9668. Taylor, J., and Chorlton, A. E. L. April 24. Filters, cleansing.-In a closed filter having a false bottom a supporting a bed of fine quartz &c., the liquid being supplied under pressure and the medium cleansed by the simultaneous action of a reverse flow, a circulating-screw B or the like, and centrifugal jets C, the circulating - screw B or the like is driven by a turbine operated by the washing-water passing through the filter, and the jets C may be supplied with water from within the filter and, according to the Provisional Specification, may be raised and lowered. During the filtering operation, the water enters by a pipe F and passes downwards through the quartz &c. to the outlet F<2>. During cleansing, water enters at F<2> and leaves at F<1>, passing through apertures d<1> and driving the turbine E on the shaft D of the circulating-screw B. Water is drawn by centrifugal force through the jets C from the pipe d and apertures d<1>. If necessary to drive the turbine E, the effective pressure of the washing-water may be increased by a force pump attached to the pipe F<2> or a suction pump to the pipe F<1>.
