Abstract
9158. Metropolitan Amalgamated Railway Carriage and Wagon Co., and Wigley, W. H. April 18. Doors, wagon; hopper wagons. - Relates to bottom discharge doors of the kind in which each door is adapted to turn by hinging about one edge or the other according as the load is to be discharged at the side of or beneath the vehicle. Each door a is hinged at b to arms c of which the other ends are hinged at d to the vehicle frame. A path j on the edge of the door, and a path f, curved at one side as shown in Fig. 1, on the corresponding arm c are engaged as shown in Fig. 7 by a roller i carried by an arm g on a rock-shaft h. When the arms g are vertical the door is held closed. When the arms g are turned to the right, the door and the arms c turn about the hinge d, and when the arms g are turned to the left, the door opens about the hinge b while the arms c are prevented from moving by the engagement of the rollers i with the curved parts of the paths f. Each shaft h carries a curved rack which is operated through spur-gearing from a hand-wheel at the end of the vehicle, or the racks on two shafts h, one disposed toward each side of the vehicle may be operated simultaneously by worms on a transverse shaft, which is rotated through bevel-gearing from a single hand-wheel. The doors may be used in conjunction with hinged floor sections s, Fig. 7, adapted to be raised by rollers carried by arms on a rock-shaft operated from a transverse shaft t.
