Aluminium nitride. - In the production of aluminium nitride by heating a mixture of alumina and carbon in a stream of nitrogen, hydrogen is added to the nitrogen, and a catalyst such as a metallic oxide, hydrate, or carbonate, or a metal, is added to the solid mixture, the total effect in facilitating the reaction being greater than the sum of the effects that would be produced by the hydrogen and the solid catalyst separately. In the examples, iron oxide and manganese carbonate are mentioned as catalysts.
