Abstract
8104. Eisermann, R., and Lehne, J. April 3. Centrifugal Sprengel purnps; Leakage-preventing devices.-An impeller 15 is arranged to rotate eccentrically within a freely-mounted drum 6 which contains water. The water is set in rotation by ribs 22 on the impeller and forms an annulus along the inner wall of the drum, which it causes to revolve by skin friction. Shafts 2, 13 are provided for the drum 6 and impeller 15 respectively. A distributing-member 7 containing air-inlet ports 8 and air-outlet ports 9 leads to the inner rim of the impeller 15 which has ports 24. Owing to the eccentricity of the impeller 15 relative to the ring of water in the drum 6, air is drawn into the cells between the ribs 22 on the righthand side, Fig. 2, and is forced out into the port 9 when the cells dip deeper into the liquid ring on the left-hand side. The discharged air passes round the rotating drum 6 towards the discharge connexion 30, the drum setting up centrifugal action which causes separation of any liquid carried over. The liquid is drawn off through an opening 32. The joint between the distributor 7 and the inner rim of the impeller 15 is packed by liquid 25 held against the joint by centrifugal force. Means are provided for maintaining the supply of liquid 25 and for equalizing the pressures on the wheel 15. The bearing 12 is protected from liquid by a sleeve 21. Various modifications of the distributor 7 containing the inlet and outlet ports are described. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which the drum 6 and impeller 15 have bearings on each side. Suction and discharge both take place through the member 15. the suction ports 36 and discharge ports 37 being separated by a disk 42, which is mounted on an oblique pin 43 and rotates with the member 15. The disk wobbles to give the necessary distributing action. Liquid packing is provided at 40. The impeller 15 may be made a good fit in the drum 15, the side disks 23 being then dispensed with. Several pumps of this type may be arranged in series in the same or separate casings.
