7232. Bornett, S. March 24, 1911, [Convention date]. Filters with hollow filtering-elements; bag filters; filter-presses.-Filters having porous elements 27, or strainers covered with cloth, arranged in an upright position on the bottom of the filter-receptacle are also provided with bodies 30 suspended between the filter-elements, so that the residue collects between the elements and the bodies during filtration and can afterwards be readily removed when the bodies are lifted out of the receptacle. In the example shown, the elements 27 and the bodies 30 are wedge-shaped and the bodies are formed as filter-elements, having their upper portions impervious so that air is not drawn in above the liquid-level. With this construction, a washing- liquid can be passed through the cakes of residue from one series of elements to the other. The elements 30 may be fixed in framework 32 moving on guide-rods 34, and they can be forced down to compress the cakes by means of nuts 39 on tie-rods or otherwise, as by hydraulic means. The filter may be mounted on trunnions so that it can be tilted to facilitate discharge of the cakes.
