Abstract

6655. Leblanc, M. A. E. March 18. Arc lamps.-In a lamp consisting of a looped vapour tube attached at its ends to open receptacles for mercury or other vaporizable material, as described in Specifications 5596/08 and 21,834/08, the lower parts 4 of the receptacles are made to slope so as to carry air or other gas bubbles away from the vapour tube. The loop is provided with one or more pockets 6 for trapping any gas present. The loop is in a vertical plane at an angle of 45 degrees to the vertical plane of the receptacles 5. Cylindrical bodies of iron, nickel, nickel-plated copper, or other material of good thermal -conductivity, may be placed in the lower parts 4 of the receptacles. which can thus have large cooling- surfaces without containing much mercury. Within the receptacles 5, there may be funnelshaped partitions 9, made with small lateral holes 11 to prevent unequal accumulation of mercury in the receptacles owing to inequalities in the axial apertures of the partitions. To each of the receptacles 5 is attached a lateral tube 13, traversed by a conductor which also passes through the funnel 9. A second conductor 14, entering one of the receptacles, makes contact with the mercury when the lamp is lit, and thereby cuts out a heating-resistance, which is wound on a narrow tube 7 opening into the vapour tube near the highest point of the latter. Vapour generated in this narrow tube serves to start the arc. A strengthening tube or rod 8 connects the receptacles 5.
