Abstract

6576. Putnam, W. H. March 16. Slipping of wheels, preventing.-A non-skid device for automobiles comprises a roller adapted to be rotated through frictional con. tact with the wheel tyre so as to throw a succession of short radial chains beneath the wheel tread. Fig. 3 shows one of two rollers B mounted on spindles d which can swing about pivots b on brackets secured near each end of the rear axle. The edges of the rollers B are concave to fit the tyres against which they normally rest but they may be raised out of contact when not in use by cords or chains g connected to a pedal near the driver's seat. Each roller carries a series of chains f which pass upwards between spacing-ribs inside the roller and are secured to lugs above the upper surface of the roller. A deflector plate i assists the chains to assume a radial position. The spindle d is prevented from moving too far outwards by an adjustable stop k.
