Rails, guard and metallic built-up.-Guard rails b with a lateral flange c acting as a wearing-surface are secured to the main rails a by wedges e, f and fork-shaped spacing-plates g; clearance is adjusted by the removal of one or more plates g and the rails are secured by bolts k operated by a spanner &c. introduced between the rails a, b. A nut l, Fig. 1, is formed with a sleeve m secured to the rail a bv a nut n, or the bolt k may pass through the rail a and the sleeve m through the rail b, in which case the sleeve may be threaded to engage a tie-bar, and the bolt k may be a continuation of the tie-bar. A nut p, Fig. 2, may he formed integral with a bolt o having its ends threaded oppositely. The base of the rail b is cut away at v to leave a space w equal to the flange c, which may thus wear quite away before the rails a, b touch at their bases.
