5356. Talent, H. March 4. Packing, non-metallic. -Packing for pistonrods, plungers, rams, &c. in hydraulic and other machinery consists of leather strips a, Fig. 2, of bevelled section, arranged with thin and thick edges alternating, and secured together by a braided or plaited covering, or by sewing, or by wire staples. The strips may be arranged in alternate pairs as shown in Fig. 3. The leather may be treated with tallow or other material.
