4897. Boehm, W. Feb. 27. Water, distilling surface condensers; bulk evaporators.-A portable apparatus for distilling and sterilizing water &c. comprises a glass or other receiver l with a surface enlarged by recesses, projections, grooves, or corrugations and coated with a covering of copper, silver, or other heat-conducting metal. The receiver is immersed in a vessel containing water or a cooling-mixture. The outlet of the retort a into the receiver l is provided with a number of steam-discharging openings. The retort a is made of glass, porcelain, or metal, has a flat bottom, and is heated by a flame e or by an electric current applied either by immersed electrodes or a heating-resistance. The steam is sterilized bv heating the tube through which it passes to the receiver either by a flame or by a thick copper wire k conducting heat from the flame e. A metal covering may be applied to the neck of the retort to aid in the cooling of the steam. The casing r may be made of wire grating or trellis.
