Monoazo dyes are obtained by combining the diazo compound of 2-methoxy-5-nitro-4-aminotoluene with #-naphthol or 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5- pyrazolone or substitution products thereof containing no sulphonic or carboxylic group. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) refers broadly to components suitable for use in the manufacture of dyes insoluble in water; this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Lakes are prepared by mixing the abovedescribed dyes with substrata such as aluminium hydroxide or barium sulphate; the dyes may be formed in presence of substrata. 2-Methoxy-5-nitro-4-aminotoluene is obtained by treating 2-chlor-5-nitro-4-aminotoluene with sodium methoxide.
