Abstract
1335. Rockman, S. C., and Melville, G. W. Jan. 17. Periscopes for submarines are constructed with a tubular part 5 rotatable in a stuffing- box 7 in the top of the hull. A folding part 6 working in a split collar 18 is hinged at 22 so that the part 6 registers with the part 5 when in the raised position. This construction enables the whole periscope to be rotated when in the raised position. The part 6 is raised by a worm-wheel 45 fast on the hinge bolt 22 gearing with a worm 47 operated by a motor or hand crank in the interior of the vessel. Lugs 23 on the part 6 take between lugs 24 on the lower part 5, and the whole periscope is rotated by the worm gear 30. A housing having a hinged top 60 protects the part 6 when lowered. In a modification, the collar in which the hinged part of the periscope is mounted is provided with trunnions which work in a bearing secured to the hull.
