601. Gardner, R. C., [Werner, A.]. Jan. 8. Thrashing - machines. -A thrashing-machine is fed by means of a single or double beltelevator provided with band-cutters. A trough 1 is pivoted on a shaft 18 to a turntable 2 which revolves about the vertical spindle 11. In the trough is mounted a band conveyer 4, over which works a compressor belt 38, one spindle 37 of which is fixed in position, the other 39 being connected to the first by a frame and supported by hooks 42 so that it can rise as the sheaves pass beneath it. The band-cutters 43 are pivoted to the trough at 45 and pressed forward by springs 47. The elevator is driven from the spindle 11 by a bevel-wheel 15, mounted on a socket 12 which fits the spindle and is driven by a pin-and-slot coupling, and engaging two bevel-wheels 17 on the shaft 18, either of which can be clutched to the shaft by a collar sliding between them and held in place by a spring- pressed notched catch. The shaft 8 from which the spindle 11 is driven extends across the machine and has a driving-wheel 9 at each side. A board 50, adjustable in position by means of a series of eyelets 51, guides the material falling from the elevator. The double elevator, Fig. 15, has the two bands 4 arranged to form a trough, and the driving-spindles are geared together by bevel-wheels 60, 61, one spindle being driven by gearing 57, 59 from the shaft 18, which is operated as in the single type. A rotary knife 62, Fig. 16, projects between the bands and is geared by a chain to the shaft 18, while above the conveyer are knives 43 of oval shape mounted on a rocking shaft 68 operated by an arm and connecting-rod from a crank-pin on one of the belt shafts.
