UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
AMOS P. MILLER, OF EL DORADO, OHIO.
STRAW-STACKING ATTACHMENT FOR THRASHING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,556, dated March 31, 1891.
Application filed October 21,1890. Serial No. 368,777. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMos P. MILLER, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at El Dorado, 1n the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Straw-Stacking Attachment for Thrashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to straw-stacking yattachments for thrashing-machines; and it has for its obj ect to construct a device of this class which may be mounted transversely at the rear end of the machine, so as to carry the straw oft' to one side.
The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 1s a plan View showing my improved straw- .carrier attached to the rear end of a thrashing-machine. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken transversely through my improved carrier and showing the rear end of a thrashing-machine in elevation. Fig.3 is a sectional view taken longitudinally through the carrier and looking toward the machine. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4 4 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the carrier detached from the thrashing-machine.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
My improved straw-carrying attachment is composed of an endless carriersuitably mounted upon a trough, which is constructed in the usual manner of side pieces 1 1, connected by a bottom piece 2, and provided at their ends with bearings for the shafts 3 and 4, which are provided with drums or pulleys 5, supporting the endless belts 6, which are connected by slats 7. The sides of the trough may be provided with guard-rails 8, which may be readily mounted detachably in staples 9 upon the sides of said trough, the guard-rails being provided with brackets or stakes 9, to engage the said staples, as will be seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings. One side of the trough, which in practice is nearest to the thrashing-machine, is provided with laterally-extendin g brackets 11, having bearings for a shaft l2, the greater portion of which is square in cross-section.
Upon one end of the shaft 12 is mounted a bevel-gear13, meshing with a pinion 14 upon one of the shafts 4. Upon the square portion of the shaft is mounted a sprocket-wheel 15, having a collar 15, and which may be connected by a chain 16 with a drive-wheel upon the thrashing-machine, from which motion may thus be transmitted to the endless carrier. The sprocketwheel 15 is longitudinally adjustable upon the shaft 12, and may be retained securely at any desired adjustment by means of a setscrew 17 extending through the collar 15 of said wheel.
To the under side of the discharge end of the thrashingmacnine is secured a horizontal arm or bracket 18, which extends rearwardly and which is connected by means of inclined braces 19 with the sides of the machine. The arm or bracket 18 is provided with vertical perforations 20, through which pass the hookbolts 21, the lower ends of which are provided with thumb-nuts 22. To adjust my improved straw-carrier in position for operation it is mounted upon the arm or bracket 18 between the hook-bolts 21, which latter are caused to engage the upper edges of the side pieces of the conveyer-trough', which latter may then be firmly secured by tightening the thumbnuts. The outer end or ends of the conveyertrough are connected by means of ropes or chains 23 with hooks 24 upon the upper side of the machine,` thus bracing the carrier in position for operation and also enabling its outer end to be raised when it is desired to place the carrier in an inclined position.
The discharge-chute of the thrashing-machine is provided with a bracket 25, which projects from the floor of the same rearwardly over the transversely-arranged stacker, so as to deposit the straw upon the latter in any position to which it may be adjusted.
My improved transverse stacker is intended to be used as supplemental to the ordinary upwardly and rearwardly inclined stacker, which latter is in practice intended to receive the chaff that may be blown out through the tail end of the machine, while the transversely-arranged stacker receives the straw and carries it off to the mow or barn. The transverse stacker is intended to be arranged directly above the ordinary staker.
The stacker which forms the subject of my IOO invention is capable of being,l adjusted transversel y with relation to the machine to which it is attached, the sprocket-Wheel l5 being longitudinally adjustable upon the shaft l2, so that it may be readily moved to the position Which it is desired to occupy.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
The construction ot my improved stacker is simple and inexpensive, and it maybe readily applied to any ordinary thrashing-machine without changing' the construction of the latter in any particular, except to provide it with the horizontal supporting-bracket 18, having the bolts by means of which the trough of the carrier is secured in position ior operation.
The device is especially useful l'or thrashing` tlax and the like, where it is desirable to separate the straw from the chaff and to convey it to a separate place ol' deposit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. As an improvement in straw-stackers, the herein described endless carrier, the frame of which is provided at one side with laterally-extending brackets, in combination with a shaft journaled in said brackets and having a longitudinally-adjustable sprocketwheel, and provided at one end with a bevelgear meshing` with a pinion upon the shaft `at one end of said endless carrier, substantially as set i'orth.
2. In a straw-stacker for thrashing-niachines, the combination of the lframe consisting ofside pieces connected by a suitable bottom piece, the shafts journaled at the ends of said side pieces and having drums or pulleys, the endless bands mounted upon the latter and connected by transverse slats, the guard-rails having; stakes adapted to engage staples upon the side pieces, brackets extending; laterally from the latter, a shaft journaled in said brackets and having a longitudinally-adjustable sprocket-wheel, and a bevel-gear mounted upon one end of said shaft and meshing,` with a pinion upon the sha-ft at one end of the frame, substantially as set t'orth.
3. The combination, with a thrashing-machine having` a rearwardly-extending arm or bracket, of a straw-stacker mounted adjustably upon said bracket' transversely to the thrashing-machine, the bolts 2l and chain 23 for securing the said stacker-frame adjustably upon the said bracket, and a sprocketwheel mounted adjnstably upon the driveshaft oi' the carrier and adapted to receive motion from the thrashi11g-machine, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto aiiixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
AMOS I. MILLER.
