Dash-pots.-Consists in providing a cylinder- and-piston lifting-arrangement for a crucible furnace with an oil cateract for controlling the various movements. In the normal position shown, the chambers 15, 19 outside and inside the fixed hollow piston 11 are filled with oil, which, as the cylinder is raised, is driven out through a pipe 34 and supplied through a pipe 35 and nozzle 36<1> to the space left hy the raising of a piston 23 fixed to and moving with the cylinder. The pipes 34, 35 are connected to a valve having passages for the motive fluid, the exhaust, and the oil.
