Abstract

72. Wilbuschewitsch, M. Dec. 24, 1910. Catalytic materials, processes, and apparatus. -In catalytic reductions, such as the conversion of unsaturated fatty acids or their glycerides into saturated compounds, the catalyst is finely divided and is composed of a catalytic agent supported on an inert support. The catalyst is applied to the inert support when the latter is in a finely divided condition, and the method of preparation consists in mixng clay, pumice, kieselguhr, or other inorganic non-fibrous substance with a solution of iron, nickel, copper, &c. in sulphuric acid. The mixture is treated with sodium carbonate to convert the metal into carbonate which is converted to the oxide by heat, and reduced to metal by means of hydrogen, suitable apparatus for effecting the reduction being described in Specification 15,439/1]. The catalyst so obtained is rubbed up with oil to form an emulsion. One method of using the catalyst, as described in Specification 30,014/10, consists' in mixing the emulsion with the substance to be treated, for example oil, and introducing this mixture through spray nozzles b into an autoclave a provided with a heating-jacket d. Hydrogen is forced through the liquid that collects at the bottom of the autoclave by introducing it through a nozzle c, consisting of an annular chamber, the inner wall of which is provided with conical or helically-formed perforations 3 inclined upwards at an acute angle to the axis of the chamber. By this means an intimate contact and emulsification of the oil-mixture with the hydrogen is obtained. The hydrogen is at a pressure of about nine atmospheres. The catalyst is regenerated by extracting the oil with a solvent, saponifying the last traces with sodium carbonate, and treating with acid, whereby the fatty acids are removed. After further treatment with sodium carbonate, the catalytic material is treated as above described. Specifications 7242/01, [Class 91, Oils &c.], 1515/03, [Class 2, Acids and salts, Organic, &c,], 2520/07, 7726/10, and 18,969/10 are referred to Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 5188/11.
