Abstract

29,083. Bates, B. W., Kelly, H. W., and Corbin, D. H. Dec. 27. [Cognate Application, 9363/12] Sound, controlling apparatus by.-Kinematograph targets are arranged so that apparatus thrown into action by sound - waves from a rifle &c. acting on a microphone or the like stops the kinematograph machine when a shot is fired. Means are provided for ensuring that the picture-projecting device will stop with a complete picture displayed on the screen. When a shot is fired, sound-waves enter a microphone 14 in circuit with a battery 17 and a primary coil 16 of a transformer, and a relay 18, 19, of the kind described in Specifications 10,856/11 and 5950/12, [both in Class 40(iii), Telegraphs, Electric], in the secondary circuit of the transformer, breaks a circuit 22 containing a battery 23 and electro-magnets 24 thereby releasing an armature 25, which is pulled down by a spring against the contacts 27, 28 and completes the following circuits, namely, (a) through electro-magnets 3, 10 controlling the brake 5 acting on a drum 2 on the heater shaft 1 of the kinematograph machine and an armature stop lever 11, (b) through a solenoid 49 with a core 50 which carries a sliding contact-maker 42 and a piston 61 working in a dash-pot 51, and (c) through an electro-magnet 29 which holds the armature down until the circuit is broken by the core 50 striking a pin 60, which separates the spring contacts 35, 36. When the kinematograph is working normally, a circuit is completed from the battery 30 through the wires 31, 32, a frame.33, the armature 25, contact 39, wire 40, contacts 42, 41. wire 43, spring 44, insulated ring 45, a coil of an electro-magnetic friction driving-clutch 12, 13, and back to the battery by the wire 48. To ensure the stopping of the kinematograph when a complete picture is on the screen, the circuit through the electro-magnet 3 is completed when a wipe-contact projection 6 on the brake drum 2 is opposite a spring contact 7. In the event of the projection over-running the contact 7, the circuit through the electro-magnets 3 is completed through a spring contact-piece 9 on the armature 4 coming in contact with a pillar 8 connected to the battery, and a spring arm 13<Î>, Fig. 3, on the brake drum comes in contact with the stop-lever 11.
