Cutting slices in succession. - In slicing- machines for bread, meat, &c., the supports for the material comprise rotary heads capable of being turned about a vertical axis into any one of several positions, so that a series of materials can be supported and sliced in turn. A machine is shown having four slicing positions. The materials are fixed to holders m, n mounted on stems adjustable in radial grooves or on radial projections on the rotary plate g. Jaws o pivoted to levers q on the underside of the plate are adjusted in the radial slots r until they abut against the sides of the material to prevent it from moving laterally, and are ihen clamped in position by wing nuts s. The plate g rotates on a stem h and may be locked in position, when any one of the materials faces the rotary knife x, by a catch e mounted on a hand-lever and engaging recesses in the plate. The stem h is carried by the usual sliding member a<2> which is advanced by a feed motion b. The unlocking movement of the hand-lever also disconnects the feed motion, so that, when the plate has been rotated to bring the desired material facing the knife, the member a<2> may be advanced rapidly by a second hand-lever until the material touches the knife.
