Trousers &c.-Waistbands, particularly for trousers, are made convertible so that the garment may be lengthened or shortened so as to be worn either with or without suspenders. In the latter case, a belt may or may not be used. The material of the upper part 1 is extended for about two inches beyond the ordinary waist line, and the extension 2 is folded inwards and lined with stiffening-canvas 3. A lining-strip 4 of any suitable material is arranged on the face of the stiffening - strip and stitched to the trousers top along a line 3<a> about half an inch above the lower edge of the downturned member 2. In effect, this forms a band stitched to the trousers intermediately of its width at a point below the median line thereof, and the folding of this band on the line of stitching 3<a> will lengthen or shorten the " rise ", i.e. the distance between the top edge of the trousers and the crutch. A depending lining-strip or skirt 5 is also stitched to the trousers to form a reinforcing-member at the waist. The extension 2 may have a number of transverse belt-receiving loops 6, which may be formed by slits in the band, preferably in the seams of the trousers. A row of buttons is provided as usual on the other side of the band above the stitching line 3<a>. The line of stitching 3<a> leaves the inner and outer members of the band separated at their ends so that they may overlap the fly of the placket. Two fastening-members 9, 10 are secured to the inner faces and both members of the waistband, and co-operate respectively with members 11, 12, secured respectively to the outer face of the outer member and to the inner face of the inner member. Fig. 1 shows the trousers as used with suspenders; with the band turned outwards, as shown in Fig. 2, the garment may be worn with or without a belt, as the extra 'thickness of material which is thereby placed around the waist of the wearer assisted by turning down the top edge of the trousers, the diameter of which is slightly less than the diameter at the waist line, tightens the garment on the body. The extension 2 may be made from a separate ciece of material.
