Abstract

26,922. Burch, W. I., [Smith, W. H.]. Dec. 1. Damping-apparatus for lithographic and like machines; inking-apparatus.-The apparatus is so constructed that the transfer rollers which effect the actual damping &c. are arranged in separate arms pivoted about the axis of the distributing-roller, and so arranged that they can be simultaneously tripped out of operative position, but during the normal running of the press, they can move independently to and from the plate cylinder without affecting the tripping-means. The transfer rollers can also be adjusted while the machine is running; and they can be removed from the press and returned to the same adjusted position relatively to the plate cylinder. As shown, the transfer rolls 18, 19 are mounted in eccentric bearings 22 fitted in circular openings in arms 20, 21 freely mounted on a fixed sleeve 10 in which is mounted a distributor roll driven from the plate cylinder 15, and receiving water &c. from a pan 4, roll 5, and vibrating ductor roll 6. The bearings 22 are formed with milled edges so that they can be rotated by hand to adjust the rollers 18, 19, and when so adjusted screws 23 secure the bearings in position. A stop 23<a> on the bearing 22, and adjustable stops 23b secured to the arms 20, 21 enable the bearings to be returned to a given position after they have once been removed. The bearings 22 can be removed from the arms 20, 21 and the journals of the rollers can then be drawn through slots 21<Î> in the arms. The position of the arms 20, 21 is controlled by means of screws 28 in the arms which contact with abutments on levers 24, 25 controlled by a cam 30 on a handoperated shaft 31. In the position shown in Fig. 2, the rolls 18, 19 are tripped out of contact with the cylinder 15, but by rotating this cam the arms 20, 21 move so as to bring the rollers 18, 19 into operative position. By adjusting the screws 28 the positions of the rolls 18, 19 can be altered during the working of the press. The arm 20 is pressed towards the cylinder by gravity or by gravity and a spring, and the lower arm is preferably pressed towards the cylinder 15 by a rod 34 controlled by a spring 33.
