Back-spacing mechanism.-Relates to arrangements wherein the carriage-feed rack is engageahle by a key-operated back-spacing dog, and stops are provided for locking the escapementwheel and for holding down the feed-rack to prevent over-running. The back-spacing dog 9 is slotted at 25 to engage a fixed stud 24 and is operated by a lever 18 provided with a pin 17 engaging a slot 17<a> in a lever 16, which is connected to the back-spacing key. The dog is provided with a pin 29 resting on a camincline 32 which is formed between lugs 30, 31 on the lever 18. When the back-spacing key is depressed, the lever 18 swings to the right and carries the dog into engagement with the feedrack 1, and then by means of the lug 30 moves the dog to the right to back-space the carriage, the movement being arrested when the end of the slot 25 engages the pin 24. The stops 27, 28 for holding down the rack and for locking the escapement - wheel 6 are in the form of lateral projections on a lever 26, which is pivoted on the stud 24 and is formed with a cam 34 engaged by the pin 17, and arranged so that the lever is swung downwards during the back-space movement, the lever being held down by the engagement of the pin 17 with the top of the slot 17<a> until the key is released. The dog is returned by a spring 36 on the lever 16, and the lever 26 is returned by a spring 37 arranged between the levers 18, 26.
