Abstract

25,469. Herzmark, N. Nov. 15. Tension and pressure members in guide-tubes. - A flexible cable for transmitting both pushes and pulls through a guide-tube comprises an inner member or core d, Fig. 5, always in considerable tension, and an outer member or coil a always in compression. The object of these initial strains is to minimize the alterations in length of the cable while working. T h e whole is enclosed in a guide-tube e. The core d preferably comprises a parallel bundle of wires held together by a helically-wound wire d<1>. The coil a is a closelycoiled wire, the adjacent windings touching, or nearly touching, one another. The core d at each end is passed through a hollow rod c, which bears on the end of the coil a. The strains are given to the parts d, a, and the ends of the core d are turned laterally through slots c<2> and round the rod c. The free ends of the core d are then clamped between nuts h, h<2>.
