Abstract

23,585. Hassenbach, H. Oct. 25. Link-work. - The flapping wings of flying- machines are provided at the inner end of the operating-arm with a crank, of which one end moves to-and-fro along a curved or straight line and the other around a closed curve so as to produce a flapping and feathering motion of the wing. Means are provided for varying the plane of action of the wing. The length of the crank on the wing arm may be varied to modify the feathering motion of the wing. The wing 4 is connected by a universal joint 3, Fig. 4, to a fixed bracket 2. and the inner end is mounted by a universal joint 6 to a shaft 8. Links 10 forming a crank of adjustable length are pivoted to the shaft 8 and to a shaft 9, which is movable by means of a screw-threaded spindle 16 between a fork 37 secured to the shaft 8. The spindle 16 is actuated by a hand-wheel 13<a> through jointed rods 13, 14, 15. The shaft 8 of each wing-controlling apparatus is connected by a pivoted link 11 to a lever 12 movable over a rack 17 and locked in position by a pawl 18 so that the inclination of the wings can be separately adjusted. The shaft 9 is connected by a link 32 to an eccentric pin 31 on a disk 28 mounted eccentrically on a disk 24, which is continuously rotated from the engine shaft 21, Fig. 6. The disk 28 is provided circumferentially with a series of holes and is normally locked to the disk 24 by a spring-actuated rod 34. When the disk 24 rotates the rod 32. which is connected by a link 33 to the frame cf the machine, it causes the crank shaft 9 to describe a curve of the second degree while the shaft 8 is moved up and down under the restraint of the link 11. In order to vary the throw of the link 32, the eccentricity of the pin 31 on the disk 24 can be varied. When the pin is at the centre of the disk, the link 32 is stationary, and the wings are in a position for gliding flight. The disk 28 carrying the pin 31 is released by withdrawing the rod 34, and the shaft 25 is braked until, by the rolling of the pinion 30 over the now stationary pinion 26, the pin 31 is brought into the required position. In a modified arrangement, the connecting-rod 32 and link 33 are dispensed with, and the pin 31 of the disk 28 is made in one with the pivot 8, which is caused to move in a circle while the pin 9 reciprocates along an arc.
