Abstract

Gyroscopic apparatus. - In apparatus for securing longitudinal stability of an aeroplane by utilizing relative movement between a stabilizing-base and some part of the aeroplane to bring stabilizing-members into action in which the stabilizing-base comprises gyroscopic pendulums 1, 2 suspended in a cardan frame, means are provided for compensating for the reactions due to inertia and vis viva consisting in rendering the immovable member 15 of the stabilizing - base independent of the cardan frame 9 and in maintaining the said member 15 immovable by subjecting it to opposite reactions derived from the deflection of the cardan frame under the influence of the inertia of the pendulums, and from the precessional movements of the gyroscopes respectively. The member 15 is freely mounted on the trunnion 10, and the reaction due to the deflexion of the frame 9 is communicated to it through an arm 26, a shaft 25, and a bevel-pinion 27; the reaction generated by the gyroscopes is communicated from the slotted levers 16, 17, which displace the pivot 21 and thus rotate the bevelpinion 27 through the arm 23, the sector 24 and the shaft 25. The epicycloidal movement thus given to the pinion 27 around the pinion 28 maintains the member 15 immovable. The asynchronism of the aforesaid two reactions may be compensated for by a reversible servomotor carried by the cardan frame 9 and rendered integral with the member 15 by a mechanical transmission. The servo - motor is driven by the gyroscopic re-action by means of appropriate parts and rotates in an appropriate direction and at an adjustable speed for displacing the member 15 in a direction opposite to that which the frame 9 tends to impart to it, the member 15 being thus maintained immovable. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) comprises also the application of similar means to the above for compensating for the reactions due to inertia and vis viva in a stabilizing-base consisting of a single gyroscope used to ensure both longitudinal and transverse equilibrium simultaneously. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
